The Christmas Market of Bolzano is closing today and Befana is greeting you!
In popular folklore Befana visits all the children of Italy on the eve of the Feast of the Epiphany to fill their socks with candy and presents if they are good or a lump of coal or dark candy if they are bad.

So the children have Saint Nicholas and then Befana! :-)
Oh my goodness, you would want to be good :)
An extra holiday treat! I'm all for that.
That's very interesting. I wonder how such a festival came to be. Bad kids really get socked, though, with lumps of coal from Santa and Befana! I would have been in so much trouble!
A perfect Befana!
Didn't know about Befana, but did know about the lump of coal. Someone gave me a Lump of Coal Stout for Christmas. I couldn't have been all bad, it was stout after all.
It is a lovely photo, Karl. Isn't interesting how many different Christmas or Christmastime traditions have developed around the globe and how similar they are?
These days, the price of coal might be a good reason to get coal in the stocking!
